Proof coins are collector versions of official U.S. Mint coins, such as the American Eagle Gold Proof Coin, which comes in a four-coin proof set or as individual coins in four different sizes including the 1-ounce coin, the one-half ounce coin, the one-quarter ounce coin and the one-tenth coin denominations. These special proof coins are minted to a mirror-like finish using special polished dyes, giving the coin a very highly detailed result that allows collectors to see every detail of the coin's images very clearly. These coins are created especially to be collected and are never circulated. The first minted proofs in the United States were made available in 1986, however not all of the four sizes were made available every year. The specialized American Eagle Gold Proof Coins are created in limited quantities and are minted at the West Point location of the U.S. Mint, which is why they display a "W" mint mark.

Perhaps the most outstanding design on the American Eagle Gold Coin is an image of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' rendition of the Statue of Liberty with flowing hair, an olive branch in her left hand and a torch in her right. The design on the reverse side of the coin was created by Miley Busiek, a sculptor who designed a male eagle that is carrying an olive branch and is flying above a nest which contains a female eagle and her babies.

Despite the fact that they are minted for collectors, all American Eagle Gold Proof Coins are of legal tender and are made of 91.67% 22 karat gold. The weight of the gold and diameter of each coin varies depending upon its denomination. These coins are backed by the U.S. government for its specific weight and gold content.

There is a huge demand for these Certified Gold Eagle Proof Coins, as many investors are beginning to collect the coins as well. The Gold Eagles are a great way to invest money wisely into a tangible, consistently valuable item, and they make a great addition to any serious coin collector's collection. You too have the opportunity to add these coins to your coin collection or to invest in something that will hold its value. These coins are a great way for individuals to invest wisely and easily in order to pass their wealth down to future generations.

Proof American Gold Eagle Coins are not only an investment, but also a work of art with lovely designs and great details in their display. The obverse design of this 22-karat coin is a tribute to Augustus Saint Gaudens, and is appreciated both coin collectors and artists.

The process used to create these lovely proof editions begins with burnished coin blanks being manually fed into presses that are fitted with special dies, creating the collector's editions. The coins are then struck multiple times, creating a detailed, softly frosted image that seemingly floats above the reflective field.

These lovely works of art and collector's items include a certificate of authenticity in a protective case while the coin itself is mounted in a blue velvet case with satin-lining to protect and showcase your investment. These Gold Proof Coins can be purchased through coin dealers, online auctions and even directly from the United States Mint.

These lovely coins do cost more than the American Eagle bullion coins since they are viewed as being actual works of art, however, because of their status as works of art they can not be recalled by the government for any reason or otherwise confiscated, the way rare coins can be. Gold is also considered a worthy investment in and of itself and is a great buffer against inflation. For example, in the 1970's when inflation was such a problem, the greatest protection against it was to be invested in gold. However, in a bull market such as the 1990's saw, gold bullion was actually an under-performer and having a portfolio heavy in gold resulted in lower returns.

It is also interesting to note that gold bullion can be purchased as part of an addition to your IRA portfolio. In doing so, the main thing to keep in mind with this is what your intention is with the investment, specifically, if you are planning on trading or holding the gold in the near future. Congress mandates and limits the amount of money that can be invested into your IRA every year. While gold is a good hedge against inflation, it also does not produce any residual income in the form of bonds, stocks, or trusts where distributions might be received. Therefore, investors looking to dedicate part of the asset portfolio to gold would be better off purchasing the collectible versions of American Gold Eagle Bullion coins and then securing them in a safety deposit box at your local bank or other financial institution that has been approved for storing gold bullion.

With American Gold Eagle Proof Coins, you get a 22-karat gold mint with a W etched on its surface, proof that the West Point US Mint created them. The Gold Proof Eagles are distinguished primarily through this distinctive minting process. For the creation of the coins, burnished blank coins are pressed on specialized equipment. After that step, the coin is struck several times, so that a detailed image is created that appears frosted and elevated above the reflective remainder of the coin. The image on the Gold Proof Eagle floats over the shiny finish of the background nicely because of this unique method.

Every coin is placed under careful inspection, and once they are approved, the Gold Proof Eagles enter a sturdy case of plastic, then in a satin-lined presentation case complete with a Certificate of Authenticity to verify that it's genuine.

Collectors and investors around the world favor these beautiful coins, and they're a great way to collect different valuable coins than the Double Gold Eagles, which are more usually much more expensive to acquire. The Lady Liberty and the 22-karat Saint Gaudens are both $20, and qualify as Double Eagle coins. You'll find that these coins are terrific investments for the future, due to their ability to appreciate in value regardless of the financial climate. Double Eagles are being taken up by investors now, who are also getting American Eagle proofs. If you want to invest in these wonderful coins, online auction can give you a place to find competitive prices for the Double Eagle and American Eagle proof coins.

The frosted details of the Gold Proof Eagle make it a collector's favorite, as the craftsmanship and attention to detail shows on every coin that is produced. Gold Proof Eagles have 1/10oz, 1/4oz, 1/2oz, and 1 ounce denominations that you can work into your budget, no matter if you are an experienced buyer or someone who is just starting out.

Produced is limited numbers by the United States Mint, Proof American Eagles are a collectible version of the standard coins from the American Eagle Coin Program. The Mint replicated the obverse design for the American Gold Eagle coin from the original creation by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, which he used on his widely revered 1907 twenty-dollar coin. The reverse features a design by sculptor Miley Busiek, depicting an American bald eagle landing in his nest while tightly clutching an olive branch. The nest contains a female eagle along with her newly born hatchlings. This reverse also displays' the coin's gold content within along with the coin's denomination, and the phrases 'IN GOD WE TRUST' and 'E PLURIBUS UNUM'.

The coins are available in four denominations: 1-ounce, 1/2-ounce, 1/4-ounce and 1/10-ounce and are minted in 22-karat gold, which is mined exclusively in the United States.

The proof versions are subjected to a different production process than the standard coins, as they are struck on specially fabricated dies designed to imprint each coin with as much detail as possible. The Mint uses lustrous coin blanks, each one receiving multiple strikes as they are fed individually into the coin press. This unique process creates images that are frosted set atop a a smooth, mirror-like background. The United States Mint goes to great lengths to ensures that each coin is of the highest possible quality.

Gold Eagles have been issued in collectible proof versions since the beginning of the series. In it's first year of production, a one ounce proof gold eagle was produced, while in the following year, a one-half ounce proof coin version was made available.

Due to the popularity of the one-ounce and half-ounce versions, beginning in 1988 the U.S. Mint made the coins available in all four denominations: one-ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce and one-tenth ounce. Between 2006 and 2008, special collectible uncirculated versions of the coin were also issued in one of each denomination.
Sets containing all four denominations are a popular way of purchasing these proof editions, while many sellers also sell the coins individually.

American Gold Eagle Proof Coins undergo a unique minting process using specialized dies. Lustrous coin blanks are fed individually into the coin press at the United States Mint where they are struck multiple times to guarantee a detailed coin image, which appears softly frosted over a mirror-like background.

Many Gold Eagle Proof Coins come shipped in a special presentation case with an official United States Mint Certificate of Authority. This certificate is the U.S. Mint's guarantee of each coin's gold content, weight, and purity.

Proof Gold Eagles are highly-prized by both collectors and investors and make a wonderful addition to any diversified portfolio.
